Jamie Lee Curtis has given a promising update regarding a potential Freaky Friday 2. It’s been 19 years since the now cult comedy came out, which starred Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who swap bodies. The 2003 film was a remake of a 1976 film adaptation of a book of the same name and was helmed by the future Mean Girls director Mark Walters. The original Freaky Friday was a box office smash, grossing $160.8 million off its budget of $26 million, and though it received generally positive reviews at the time, it has since gained a massive fan following, with many eager to see a sequel.
While at the premiere of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Jamie Lee Curtis has given word about updates regarding a potential Freaky Friday 2. Her expectations for the possibility are high as, in her quick interview with Variety, Curtis said that, while there’s no proper development in occurrence, talks are definitely happening to reunite her with Lindsay Lohan for the sequel. We’re talking. People are talking. The right people are talking . . . We (she and Lohan) are both committed to it. It’s not ours to make — it’s Disney’s to make, and I think they’re interested. And we are talking.
Could A Freaky Friday Sequel Work 19 Years Later?
When asked if she thought talks of a sequel would garner traction, Curtis answered confidently, leaving some to feel that a Freaky Friday sequel is not too much of a reach. She made a good point in saying that she and Lohan are at ages that warrant an intimate follow-up. Curtis is nearing her mid-sixties, and Lohan’s in her mid-thirties, which presents the opportunity for a story that finds Lohan’s character, Anna, with a kid, someone for either actor to swap bodies with. Being a mother would flip the tables on Anna, evolving her arc from a coming-of-age story to one about navigating motherhood herself.
As for Curtis, being in her mid-sixties would give her the chance of her character, Tess, to be one giving sage advice. With a life filled with undoubtedly eventful experiences, Tess will have a lot to do and say to help, should such a swap happen between Anna’s hypothetical daughter or son, or even once again between the mother and daughter. A Freaky Friday 2 that takes place in real-time would be fitting, as a child born shortly after the events of the first film would be at an age full of teen woes and angst similar to Anna’s, which could then also provide updates on how Tess’ marital union with Ryan, played by NCIS vet Mark Harmon, worked out.
Whatever plot the project may take, Curtis’ commitment to making a potential Freaky Friday 2 happen is sure to come as a promising sign for those who have been eager to see a return to the body-swapping world. While legacy sequels can be hard to get off the ground, Disney’s recent efforts to finally deliver on the long-awaited Enchanted sequel with Disenchanted, as well as Hocus Pocus 2 and The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, could see them eager to capitalize on the fan following of the original film to develop a sequel. Additionally, with Lohan enjoying her own career resurgence with Netflix’s Falling for Christmas, now may be as good a time as any to make Freaky Friday 2 come to fruition.
