Newly announced by Crunchyroll, anime fans can now access music on the streaming service. Anime music has become increasingly popular as the medium has spread globally, creating a lucrative market. From iconic OPs to ending songs, music is an integral part of fans’ anime-watching experience.
Crunchyroll is best known for its anime offerings and recently hosted the Crunchyroll 2023 Anime Awards. Now, the service is expanding via a new partnership to bring fans an improved streaming experience. This new initiative was announced at the Anime Awards and it greatly broadens what subscribers are able to access and enjoy.

In addition to the hottest new anime series and simulcasts, Crunchyroll is partnering with Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., via Sony Music Entertainment in the U.S. This will allow the company’s Japanese music to be licensed for broader accessibility within the anime streamer’s collection. The newly introduced content includes “iconic performances from popular and contemporary artists.” Fans will have access to short-form music videos and “more than 100 full-length live concerts.” The artists included in the announcement are Aimer, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, LiSA, and Hiroyuki Sawano, though there will be many others.
LiSA is the artist of hit opening anime songs like “Gurenge” from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and “Crossing Field” from Sword Art Online. Aimer has also done lots of musical work for anime, including the ending song of Chainsaw Man “Deep Down”, and the Bleach ending song “Re:Pray.” Asian Kung-Fu Generation won an American Anime Award back in 2007 for the Fullmetal Alchemist theme, “Rewrite”, and composer Hiroyuki Sawano provided music for Attack on Titan. These songs, and many others, have become staples for anime fans making Crunchyroll’s new partnership a good move. It hasn’t always been easy to access musical content from Japan in North America. Already Crunchyroll subscribers can watch a live performance of ASCA, who sings “Resister” – the theme song from season two of Sword Art Online: Alicization.
While it doesn’t have Western radio time, anime fans have spent countless hours listening to and sharing their favorite opening and ending themes. With this Sony Music Entertainment partnership, more access than ever is being granted, connecting music to fans across the globe faster. Hopefully this opens the door for more opportunities to connect anime fans around the world with the content they love and more ways of interacting with it.
