The Continental executive producers Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk addresses the John Wick show’s future beyond season 1 and whether season 2 is on the table. Following the release of John Wick: Chapter 4 earlier this year, the franchise is set to expand with several exciting spinoffs. In addition to a movie starring Ana de Armas, Peacock series The Continental will chronicle a young Winston’s early days at the titular assassin hotel in New York City in the 1970s.
Ahead of the show’s release on Peacock this weekend, Lee and Iwanyk speak with Collider about whether The Continental season 2 will happen. Regarding a follow-up season, Lee says that “those conversations are just starting now,” and that “there’s definitely more story to tell,” adding that the creative team is “hopeful for a second season.” Check out Iwanyk’s comment below regarding how the franchise approaches sequels and follow-ups:
“The one common emotion of all the John Wick movies, when we’re shooting them, and with the John Wick TV show, is that we never talk about sequels. We’re so terrified and desperate to make sure the stuff we’re doing works.
“We don’t wanna tempt the movie and television Gods and have them say, ‘Oh, you’re getting cocky and talking about a sequel? Well, f— you!’ I don’t wanna anger them. I wanna be humble in front of them.”
What Could The Continental Season 2 Be About?
Played in the movies by Ian McShane, The Continental follows a younger version of Winston played by Colin Woodell. The series will chronicle his introduction into the world of the hotel and his meeting of various eccentric figures in that ecosystem, including Mel Gibson’s Cormac, the hotel’s manager. While season 2 could well follow Winston’s further adventures at the New York City Continental, the premise of the show is such that season 2 could take a different form.
Instead of once again picking up the action in ’70s New York City with Winston, the show could actually take an anthology approach, following new characters at a different hotel location. The movies, for example, have featured Continentals in Rome, Italy, and Osaka, Japan, either of which would be an interesting location for season 2. John Wick: Chapter 4‘s Koji Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada) shines during his brief tenure on screen in the latest sequel, and a new season of the show could explore his backstory.
The movies allude to the fact that there are Continental hotels all around the world, and any number of them could serve as the foundation for a new season. It remains to be seen how The Continental season 1 will be received, but, if it ends up being a success for Peacock, it certainly sounds like another batch of episodes could be getting the green light.
