Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk issued its staff an ultimatum: Either commit to working extremely hard or leave the company.
“We will need to be extremely hardcore,” Musk wrote in an email sent earlier Wednesday and seen by . “This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade,” the message said.
Employees have until Thursday to click yes on a form embedded in the email if they wish to remain within the company. Otherwise, they’ll be given three months of severance.
Since taking over Twitter, the world’s richest man reportedly sacked half of the company’s workforce — including lobbyists, content moderators but also engineers — creating chaos within the social media platform.
In the past few days, he has also fired engineers who were publicly and privately critical of his plans. According to Bloomberg, about a dozen people were let go this week in only 24 hours. According to the New York Times, Musk plans to get rid of middle managers as well.
“Twitter will also be much more engineering-driven,” the email reads. “Design and product management will still be very important and report to me, but those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway,” Musk told his staff.
